We make recommendations a lot as to what kind of person might be a good fit for each of our mules. We think just about anyone would enjoy Sundance’s sweet personality and genuine willingness to please, and that he’d be happiest in a home where he’s got people who enjoy interacting with him.  He also might make a better-than-average *first* mule for someone who is new to mules because he’s uncomplicated and forgiving.

On the ground for handling, Sundance is a dream - he’ll regularly walk away from grain to get attention, and isn’t the slightest bit picky in his affections.  He just plain likes people. Catching him has never been a problem, even when he’s been training hard.  All the basics go without mentioning - lead, load, stand tied, feet, ears, stand for tacking.  He likes it all - in his mind, it’s all attention!  Even though Sundance is the perfect size for a wide variety of riders, he still knows how to perform the “Pick me up” maneuver - meaning he’ll sidepass over to let you mount from a block, table, fallen log or anything you care to use - AND he expects to stand still and wait until you say it’s time to go.

Not every gaited mule rider wants a mule that’s going to breathe fire and rack a hole in the wind - lots of folks just want a smooth ride while they enjoy nature and take in some scenery. That’s just fine with this mule - “Fast” is never Sundance’s first choice. Instead, he’d rather take his time, as all his saddle gaits are very relaxed, natural and easy to find - his head nods a little and his happy ears swing along. You don’t need to know a lot about gaited horses and mules to be comfortable on Sundance - he’s so natural that when you ride his gaits, you can practically feel him cradling your seat bones on his back. When you’re getting to know him, you don’t have to worry that he’ll run off with you, or rush down a hill or be careless with his footing.  There’s something confidence-inspiring about a mule that is uncomplicated and also takes care of you. Sundance truly brings the very best of both horse and donkey into focus - all wrapped up into one particularly unique and endearing package!

5 Out on the trails, you can expect his sweet, biddable nature to continue. Even if you don’t have a lot of confidence, Sundance doesn’t mind - he has enough to loan you some while you get to know each other. Looking good while handling terrain is his job! Hills, rocks, water crossings and mud are no big deal - he’ll take you where there aren’t even trails to follow!  Sundance has also seen all the usual suspects out on the trail - deer, turkeys, and all kinds of wildlife plus he’s also had a lot of experience living on a working farm.  Kids, dogs, poultry and dogs underfoot - none of this concerns him in the slightest, and he couldn’t care less about ag equipment, or the UPS man, either. He’s got a nice little trail neck rein, and is soft in the bridle and responsive to leg cues, so he’s handy to open and close gaits and used to riding through cattle to get from Point A to Point B.
